Something fishy

A few weeks ago, I told Brianna she could get a goldfish in a bowl. I thought it would be a good first-pet for her. Like always with my husband, things got blown out of proportion, and we ended up with a full-fledged aquarium. Granted, it is only 5 gallons, but it is currently sitting in the middle of my bar.

As a result, "Goldilocks Sunshine" and "Barack Obama" became part of the family. They are actually quite entertaining to watch.

Do any of you parents remember the sometimes snide comments disguised as advice you might have received from strangers when you were a new parent? Well, that is NOTHING compared to when you off-handedly mention to a pet-store employee that you plan to put 3 goldfish in one 5 gal. tank. You would have thought I was planning a diabolical crime! Regardless, I wanted a red-capped oranda as the final member of our aquarium family. So after 2 weeks of tracking, I finally found a healthy-looking one today:

The technical term for the large, bumpy growth on their heads is a "wen", and since it is an oranda, I combined the two and named him "Wren". He is quite a bit smaller than his roommates, but he will grow. The cool thing is, the wen will also continue to grow and look like a big bumpy grapefruit coming out of his head! Am I the only one who thinks this is cool??

Taking photos of fish is hard! For some reason, I found this one amusing...split personality? ☺

Awww, you got your fishies! Congrats!!! Now all you need are real plants. Don't get those fake ones. They're useless. And buy the ones that are "weeds" in real life. You'll never need to worry about buying plants again cuz they just keep growing like crazy.

Oh, and plan to clean the water regularly. Goldfish produce a lot of waste... I learned that the hard way... Ours started getting mystery black spots, which turned out to be ammonia burn -ouch!

These new fish look nice. I love those googly-eyed ones and the red cap is gorgeous. Can't wait to see how he turns out.

We have a really good filter going (and I changed it today for the first time...yuck!). The water is really clear, so do I assume it is okay?

Cute fish!! We did the same thing years ago, thought it would be easy and fun. When we moved to the new house, the fish started jumping out of the aquarium (even with the top on, they found the hole where the pump and stuff go through). It's really gross finding dead fish on your floor......

cool! an aquarium is much nicer than a bowl. :) my husband has a 13-15 year old fish that lives in his own aquarium. they can grow as large as their space allows. :D so the fish is huuuge! :D

Wow! I once had a huge goldfish in an aquarium that someone caught in my uncle's pond. I wonder how old they can get??

Cute fish! I loved having fish as a kid, but the clean up is gross and my fish kept committing suicide at night or when we cleaned the bowl. Rather upsetting experience to have as a child.

Anyway - what on earth did those pet shop people say?? You'd think they'd be glad to sell fish. The tank looks great and the fish are very pretty. My favorite thing to do is visit the Missouri Botanical Garden and feed the koi fish.

Love the black one!

I also promised my son we would get him some fish if he continues well with his potty training! Well my husband did actually!

Hopefully by the end of the month we can fullfill that promise!

We are also getting a small tank, I had a "bowl" which only had the tiny wini fish in it and they all died!!! The man in the fish shop said it was ok without a filter and we cleaned it often but obviously not!!! So a small tank with all the bits in it is great!;)

I am getting one too as I have had one before and the fish didn't die!

PS. We have an Etsy give away in my blog! Go see!

Monica, we bought ours as a set at Walmart. The 5 gal. tank, cover, filter, filter cartridge, and some food was $30. You can get the kit with a 10 gal one for $40, I think. I am ready to upgrade! LOl

Two years ago Feb. our boys got 3 goldfish in a 5 gal. tank... the orwanda, passed on to fishy heaven a couple weeks after we got them... Today, we have a 10 gallon tank and a giant orange fantail and a giant calico fantail, probably 4 and 5 inches ... The filter in the tank has to be cleaned about every other day, because goldfish are known as "messy" fish... Someday we may just have to dig them a pond!!!

I know the pet store you probably went to if it's the one in K-town. She's horrid isn't she! My husband and I got to the point where we will actually drive to Quincy to get pet stuff. You have my condolences on the pet shop debacle, but congratulations on purchasing your Orandas. We had some names Dudley and Chuck Norris, neat fish.

Handmade_Sunshine...oh goodness, yes! Maybe it wasn't so much what was said, but the look I received and the judgemental tone in which it was delivered. Plus, I walked in one day at 10:45 am, before picking my daughter up from pre-school. The door was unlocked (I had to use the back entrance due to no parking on Main st., like usual), and I was told that they didn't open until 11. Geez! I was there, a potential customer, what was 15 minutes?? Ugh. Yes, I will probably go to Quincy when the need arises again... unless I am DESPERATE! LOL
